About Crosstown
Crosstown is a free daily puzzle for anyone who knows (or wants to know) the New York City subway. Every day there’s a new 3×3 grid. Fill each square with a station that fits both its row and its column. Busy stations are the obvious answers, so the rarer your pick, the more points you score.
Crosstown is an independent fan project. It isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), MTA New York City Transit or the City of New York. Line colors and letters are used only to identify which trains serve a station.
Where the data comes from
- Stations, lines, boroughs and station types: MTA Subway Stations and Complexes and MTA Subway Stations, from the MTA’s open data on data.ny.gov.
- Ridership, used for rarity: MTA Subway Hourly Ridership, one week in October 2024.
- Shorelines, used for “By the water”: Borough Boundaries from NYC Open Data.
The game uses daytime service. Late-night and weekend changes aren’t included, and station details can change after the data was collected.
